Ukrainian Comic Opera: “Kozak Beyond The Danube River” by S. Hulak-Artemovsky October 9, 2010

The Ukrainian Heritage Club of Northern California presents the California premiere of the Ukrainian comic opera “Kozak Beyond The Danube River” (“Zaporozhets za Dunaem”) by Ukrainian composer Semen Hulak-Artemovsky featuring professional and accomplished musicians and singers of Northern California of Ukrainian and American descent: Oksana Sitnitska, Svetlana Merlichenko, Sergey Zadvornyy, Andrew Nickel, Igor & Maxim Veligan, Alexandra Sokolovych, Olha Shevchyk, Ola Herasymenko-Oliynyk, Roman & Olesya Ritachka, Vocal Ensemble "Kolyada", Tatiana Scott, "Kalyna" Dance ensemble under direction of George & Irina Arabagi and many others; foreword by Prof. Yuriy Oliynyk, a member of the Ukrainian Union of Composers; and, the opera also features colorful Zaporozhian Kozak costumes and folk-dancing.

“Zaporozhets za Dunaem” is one of the best-known Ukrainian comic operas depicting national themes. The story begins with Zaporozhian Kozaks exiled to the Ottoman Empire. Frustrated by their treatment at the hands of the Turks, they engage in a series of machinations until they are finally released by the Turks to return to their homeland.
