Rewritten by Anton Chekhov from his earlier play, The Wood Demon, the now treasured Uncle Vanya was the second of his four masterpieces to be produced by the Moscow Art Theater. The change of title signaled Chekhovs re-focusing of the play onto the fulminating, querulous Vanya, an aging would-be lover at the center of a comic menage. The contrast of Vanyas world-weariness with his niece Sonyas simple faith endows this cherished drama with immortal and bittersweet poetry.
