Built on the fall line where the Piedmont meets the Tidewater region, Richmond has always been a city defined by the land. In his new book Nonesuch Place: A History of the Richmond Landscape (History Press, 2009), Tyler Potterfield considers the many roles of the James River through the centuries, describes the rationale for the location of the Virginia State Capitol and describes the struggle to reclaim green space, among other aspects of Richmond’s natural history.
