Business Leaders Luncheon

Topic: "Raising the Academic Bar Among Hispanic Students and Closing the Minority Scholastic Achievement Gap in Arlington County Public Schools."

Speaker: Arlington County School Superintendent Dr. Robert G. Smith, 1426 North Quincy Street, Arlington, Virginia 22203.
About the Speaker: In his eleven years as Arlington County School Superintendent, Dr. Robert G. Smith has spearheaded a number of initiatives designed to ensure rising student achievement among all students and to eliminate achievement gaps between groups of students as measured by the Virginia State tests and other measures. Throughout his tenure in the Arlington Public Schools, Dr. Smith has emphasized the importance of Teaching for Meaning as opposed to teaching solely to pass tests. He has also stressed the importance of encouraging students to take rigorous courses, such as Algebra I in middle schools and Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes in high schools. He points to research that suggests that the challenges of rigorous classes motivate students to excel and prepare them to succeed in college. Prior to coming to Arlington, Dr. Smith was head of curriculum and instruction for the Spring Independent School District in Houston, Texas, for 16 years. Earlier, he spent 16 years in the Frederick County (Maryland) Public Schools.Dr. Smiths work has been recognized by his colleagues and the communities where he has served as an educationalleader.Dr. Smith holds Ph.D. and M.A. degrees from the University of Maryland and a B.A. degree from Davis and Elkins College. Building a Trusted Website:

National surveys show that the top three concerns users have about their online experience, particularly when ecommerce is concerned, are: 1) Is my personal information safe and secure?; 2) can I trust the site and the information on it?; and, 3) does the site represent a credible business and has a comprehensive and easy-to-understand Privacy Policy?

Your trust is important to us. Our website has been carefully designed and is being improved continuously in order to provide you with an informative, enjoyable, credible, and secure online experience.
For example, we use state-of-the-art, 128-bit Extended Validation security technology like Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to protect your e-Commerce transactions. Also, we partner with national and/or international organizations that are committed to maintaining the highest possible standards of service, security, reliability and trust, such as the Better Business Bureau, EventBrite, Verisign, 1&1, and Paypal.
Finally, we have developed policies and operating procedures to protect your privacy, and have periodic, one-on-one training of our staff to ensure that they are faithfully followed.

If you have questions about the security and reliability of our website, do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

About our Calendar of Events:

The MAHCC Calendar of Events does not include regular or special meetings of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee, meetings of the different standing and ad-hoc committees, or any other activity where attendance is restricted to "members only."

Although we are a multilingual organization, unless otherwise indicated MAHCC-sponsored events are conducted in ENGLISH.
Inclement Weather Policy:

In the event of inclement weather during which the public schools are closed (not delayed) in the jurisdiction where the activity is taking place, meetings and events of the MAHCC or of its chapters taking place that same day will be canceled. Every effort will be made to post a notice of event cancellations on the MAHCC website but, in its absence, the MAHCC Weather Policy takes precedence.
