Mahler's profound Das Lied von der Erde is a stunning meditation on life and death, as reflected in the passing of the seasons. Tippett penned The Rose Lake after a trip to Africa, where he was so moved by the play of shimmering light on the surface of a hidden lake that he immediately set it to music.
