One of the most erudite film critics and historians, David Thomson vividly recalls his post WWII childhood in London and his seminal love affair with the cinema. Moving from the Noir-esque landscape of his bombed-out neighborhood to the gilded movie palaces provided the perfect escape for a young boy with a vivid imagination, and offered emotional sustenance not available from his estranged family. Thomson eloquently describes his mottled boyhood and his dreams of a different future in this poignant memoir.
