TROUBLE IN PARADISE
An uneven group show, curated by Amy Lipton, on the theme of ecocide:
nature poisoned or poisonous. Alexis Rockman paints mutant flora and fauna
in a desert cut away to reveal buried name-brand garbage. Brian Alfreds
Testlabuin his catchy style of razor-edged, flat, dyspeptically colored
shapesrenders a sterile room in which an apparatus sprays poppies with
what you know is not mere water. A large photograph by Edward Burtynsky
revels in the Luciferian colors of nickel tailings on a mudflat, from an
industrial plant in Ontario. Through June 26. (Van Brunt, 819 Washington
St. 212-243-8572.)
