The Houston Arboretum has a wide variety of classes and workshops all year long. Check out what we have for the coming weeks:

Have you ever wondered what that tree is growing in your backyard or next door? Or at the Arboretum? Then come to Tree ID for the Novice October 17, at 2 – 5 p.m. In this 3-hour workshop, you will learn how to use leaves and field guides to identify 30 tree species native or naturalized to the Houston area. Note: No prior botany knowledge required. Cost of workshop includes two books on the trees of Texas and North America. Bring a small leaf-covered tree branch from home for identification. Closed toe, walking shoes are highly recommended. More at http://www.HoustonArboretum.org/tree_id.asp.

Somewhere between what the eye can see and what shows up under a microscope is a world of wonders. Have you seen a dragonfly’s whiskers? Or a Monarch butterfly caterpillar hatching from the egg? Then an Intro to Insect and Spider Macro Photography is for you. As long as your camera or lens has a “macro” setting, it should be suitable for this class. The class is aimed at beginners with a desire to explore nature up close. The Wednesday evening class (7 p.m.) will discuss: equipment, lighting, basic camera operations, methods to find and pose your 6/8 legged subjects.
The Saturday part of the class (starting at 8 a.m.) will be outside on the Arboretum grounds photographing any little thing that wants to pose for a photo. This will be followed by a short classroom session to discuss techniques used for some of the morning’s photos. Bring your camera, flash, tripod, a battery and memory card/film. A bustling schedule of year round activities and courses are available for adults, children and families to create a sense of wonder and appreciation for nature. For more information, call 713-681-8433. To learn about other exciting Houston events, visit www.Ltbaehr.com.
