By the mid-19th century skilled craftsmen in Massachusetts began making fine instruments. Early violin makers first patterned their instruments after European models, eventually developing their own ideas and methods. Largely self-taught, they often began their careers as tool, clock, gun or pattern makers who adapted their skills to carving the complex curved patterns of a violin.
