Oaxaca City has always been known as one of Mexico’s premier colonial gems. Framed by the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains 5,000 feet above sea level (and 340 miles southeast of Mexico City), Oaxaca City is the perfect combination of modern day comforts and a 3,000-year old past. UNM Continuing Education invites you to join us on a tour of this city which includes tours of Puebla, known as the “City of Tiles;” the Oaxaca Mercado, a colorful marketplace filled with all kinds of handicrafts and food; A presentation of the Guelaguetza, a traditional display of Oaxacan culture through dance and song; The archaeological site of Mitla, an important Mixtec ceremonial center; A visit with the Zapotec weavers of Teotitlan to observe their traditional weaving and wool-dying techniques; Santa Maria del Tule, the site of a massive Mexican cypress tree-quite possibly the largest and oldest tree in the world; San Bartolo Coyotepec, known around the world for its unique black pottery; The village of San Martin Tilcajate, the birth place of the magical “alebrije” woodcarvings; and Santo Tomas Jalietza to see the local back strap weavers. On this tour, you will also explore ruins of Monte Alban, built by the Zapotec Indians between 500 and 200 BC., located high on a mountaintop overlooking the city of Oaxaca. This week long trip runs Sunday, October 3, 2010 through Saturday October 9, 2010, however you must register by September 1, 2010. The $1,875 fee is all inclusive, land only. The group will meet at the Albuquerque International Airport on the day of departure. For more information visit dce.unm.edu/story-of-new-mexico.htm or call Joan Cok at 505-277-0563.
