Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, written in 1863, is neither petite nor particularly solemn. It was the last of Rossini’s Péchés de vieillesse -- his sins of old age: a last testament of the composer bowing his head before God 30 years after having ended his career in opera. The music ranges from hushed intensity to boisterous high spirits, and abounds in the memorable tunes and rhythmic vitality for which Rossini became justly famous. In Rossini’s own words, “Is it indeed music for the blest that I have written? Or just some blessed music?”
This is a mass unlike any other you are likely to come across.
