Brooklyn, New York: Roulette presents the world renowned Tori Ensemble featuring Yoon Jeong Heo (geomungo-zither), Erik Friedlander (cello), Kang Kwon Soon (vocals), Young Chi Min (daegum-flute, changgo-drum), Ned Rothenberg (clarinets, shakuhachi-flute), and Satoshi Takeishi (percussion), December 9 & 10, 8pm.
The Tori Ensemble represents a collaboration among some of the most respected musicians of the Korean classical tradition and the New York avant-garde scene, transcending musical borders in its acclaimed work that mingles jazz, new music, and ancient Korean traditions ranging from shamanistic rituals to pansori vocals.
This performance will show the most basic, instinctive beauty of “Arirang”, a song of love and longing sung across the lands of Korea through the passing of thousands of years. The most representative of Korea’s original folk music, it has been recreated through various different musical interpretations (Tori) in each of Korea’s diverse local regions which will be represented throughout the performance. The musicians will move freely between solo and ensemble performances, eliminating boundaries between music and instrument.
