FAMILY FUN DAY TO CELEBRATE BRITAIN’S ARMED FORCES: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

An authentic Second World War Home Guard Training School is set to become one of the main attractions as Somerset County Royal British Legion celebrates Armed Forces Day.

The event, Celebrating Britain’s Armed Forces: past, present and future, is being held on Saturday 27th June 2009 at Timsbury Recreation Ground, near Bath. As part of national celebrations, it recognises the support given by service men and women and will be split into two parts.

The first part of the event, beginning at 12pm, will see spectators being encouraged to participate in an authentic Second World War Home Guard Training School, whilst the Second World War battle simulation is also expected to be a highlight of the day.

Other features include stalls and marquees run by Regimental Associations, ex-Service and local charities, military and vintage vehicles, a falconry display, and barbeque.

The Sunset Ceremony, in which over 800 ex-Land Army Girls in the County of Somerset have been invited to take part in, will close the event at 5pm. HM’s Lord Lieutenant of Somerset and Lady Elizabeth Gass will take the salute in a ceremony that will be attended by guest of honour, and Britain’s last Tommy, Harry Patch (110).

The second part of the event, which will be held at the Conygre Hall in Timsbury, is a Second World War themed Dance and Pig Roast. A licensed bar will be available throughout the evening which will run from 7.30pm until 12 midnight. The New Parkway Show Band will perform music from the era, and prizes will be presented for the best themed costumes by ‘oldest swinger in town’ Fred Wedlock.

County Manager, Major David Lowe, said: “It is important to recognise the contributions that have been made by members of the British Armed Forces and Armed Forces Day provides the perfect opportunity for this.

“I am thrilled to make Timsbury a part of the national celebrations, and to be able to offer a fun-filled family event through which the community can help honour the efforts of such people.”
