Films requested by library users make up Novembers Williamsburg Regional Library Thursday Afternoon Film Series. The free movies are shown in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland Street, at 2 p.m. every Thursday, except for November 22 when the library will be closed for Thanksgiving. November 1 Jolson Sings Again (1949)
This sequel to the popular Jolson Story focuses on the master showmans later years, when his relentless performing schedule and playboy lifestyle took a physical and emotional toll on him. Larry Parks returns in the title role with Barbara Hale playing his love interest.
November 8 For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943)
Ernest Hemingways novel about the Spanish Civil War makes a fine vehicle for Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. He plays an idealistic American who joins a guerilla band fighting the fascists, and she plays the brutalized girl for whom he falls. Directed by Sam Wood, the film boasts scenic cinematography and an Oscar winning performance by Katina Paxinou as the tough female revolutionary, Pilar.
November 15 Gigi (1958)
A young French girl (Leslie Caron) being trained as a courtesan by her grandmother finds true love with a wealthy man (Louis Jourdan). Lerner and Loewe wrote the wonderful score for this superb musical, which won nine Academy Awards including Best Picture.
November 22 No film, library closed for Thanksgiving.
November 29 The Long, Long Trailer (1954)
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz play newlyweds honeymooning in a huge trailer on wheels. Disaster ensues in this broad comedy, which costars Marjorie Main and was directed by Vincente Minnelli.
