The rapid tempo of technological change today far outstrips development cycles for military systems. Before a system is fielded, the technology upon which it is based can become obsolete. Requirements meanwhile also creep or change during system development adding to the already complex process. Deployed systems now have expected useful lives of several decades and their sustenance over the entire life cycle requires a difficult and costly endeavour. This requires that when we acquire a system today, we will also need to acquire the technology so that we can maintain, upgrade and subsequently integrate new systems and sub-systems to our acquisition.

Through-life systems management applies a whole life approach to managing system support and sustainability. At the front end it encompasses the supportability engineering, sustainability and cost impacts are accounted for, and the throughout the system life it continues to monitor, improve and adapt the support to the changing threats, operational requirements and environments.

Through-life systems management and support can be applied to legacy/in-service systems as well as new programmes, changing the support arrangements to suit new doctrines.
