Segundo Montes, SJ, sociologist and philosopher, was the director of the Institute for Human Rights at the University of Central America in San Salvador. He was one of six Jesuits who, along with two women, were murdered in San Salvador on November 16, 1989.

From 1957 to 1967, Thomas R. Melville was a priest in the Maryknoll Society assigned to Guatemala. In 1967, Melville was expelled from Guatemala for associating with a guerilla leader in an effort to secure the role of Christians living under a United States supported terrorist government. Upon his expulsion, Thomas Melville was replaced by Ron Hennessey. Through a Glass Darkly is Melville’s story of the life and hardships of the Guatemalan people as told by the experiences of Ron Hennessey.

After his expulsion from Guatemala, Thomas Melville left the Maryknoll Society, married Margarita Bradford, a former missionary, and became involved in protesting the Vietnam War. He and Mrs. Melville burned draft files at Catonsville, Maryland in 1968. For their activities, Thomas Melville spent 18 months in Lewisburg Federal Prison and Margarita Melville spent 12 months at Alderson Federal Penitentiary. Both have received doctorates from American University in Sociocultural Anthropology.
