I had never heard them before, listened to a little bit on their website, sounded pretty good, but I really wasn't sure what to expect. Of course it helped that the ABC is a nice venue to see a band and ABC has some awesome beers on tap. LOL The Zen Tricksters put on a fantastic show, these guys are incredible!!! These guys know the secrets of applying jazz improvisation techniques to a I IV V blues structure and being able to coherently pull it off. Not only can they jam but their technical proficiency is awesome! Having seen the Trickster's heroes, the Grateful Dead, a few times, the TRICKSTERS ACTUALLY DO THE GRATEFUL DEAD BETTER THAN THAN THE DEAD!!!! There was a nice crowd there in spite of the nasty cold weather and everyone seemed syncronized to a group mind thing that the Dead often invoked. The crowd was an interesting mix of young neo-hippies, older 30-40 something veteran deadheads and even some geezers, one who was overheard stating that the show reminded him of a 1967 show at the Avalon ballroom in San Francisco. LOL I hope ABC puts on more shows like this and BTW, ABC should make their concert flyers available for sale, awesome artwork! In a nutshell, Go see the Tricksters, you won't be disappointed, even if you wern't a fan of the Dead. THESE GUYS ARE F***ing mind blowingly OUTSTANDING!!!!!
