A little more than 25 years ago a group of musicians led by guitarist Robben Ford dedicated themselves to pushing the boundaries of jazz with a deceptively intense, distinctive sound whose music incorporated elements of bebop, funk, R&B and rock. They called themselves the Yellowjackets. Not surprisingly a band with such a long history has gone through some personnel changes – and The Yellowjackets, who makes its first "We Always Swing" Jazz Series appearance this season, are no exception. However, what is exceptional about this band is the consistency of sound and energy that the quartet – regardless of personnel – has and continues to deliver. A favorite the world over, The Yellowjackets includes noteworthy saxophonist and arranger Bob Mintzer, original members Russell Ferrante and Jimmy Haslip and "newcomer," drummer Marcus Baylor, who joined the band seven years ago – which makes him not so "new" any more. Suffice to say the most recent Yellowjackets edition is tight having now played hundreds and hundreds of gigs together. Taken as a whole, the group's numerous recordings cumulatively reflect the ensemble's ability to cut a wide swath of styles under the jazz umbrella. Sessions – both live and in the studio — incorporate everything from straight-ahead acoustic music, to the electric and effects-oriented jams.
