British audiences are relatively unfamiliar with the
dramas of Eastern Europe, but The Wedding and A Dybbuk would be familiar in any
theatre in Poland or the Ukraine. These
are two great Symbolist dramas from the beginning of the last century.

In each,
we see a village caught between the Old World
and the New. Each play presents us with a phantasmagoria of
ghosts and spirits come to test their respective traditional
communities. In each the weight of history, of collective story, hangs heavy
over what Wyspiański
calls a "world of magic spells and charms" of prayers and curses. The subtitle ‘Between Two Worlds" could apply to
both as they explore heaven and hell, ancient and modern, in poetry, dance and
song. As Ansky says:

"The Dead should not be excluded from any celebration".
