During his three years of dedicated service to the American Army including serving the 1-89 Cavalry of the 10th Mountain Division, Thamir Mohammed, a native of Baghdad, made significant contributions in the war against Iraq and Al-Qaeda.

On September 28, 2008, while driving his personal car, he survived a car bombing, courtesy of Al-Qaeda. Now certain that he was exposed, Thamir went to the US Embassy in Iraq and applied for a refugee visa.

For an entire year, he waited for approval from the US government while living at home in Baghdad, fearing for the lives of his family including his wife and two children. Finally, they escaped to Illinois where Thamir looked forward to living the American dream.

What is his life like today? Is he living the dream? Does he feel safe here?
