The Walkmen quickly became critical darlings following the 2004 release of their first album, "Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone," and their previously cultish fan base grew exponentially when "The O.C." blessed their second album, "Bows + Arrows." The band creates a hypnotic alternate universe through well-thought arrangements which use a variety of vintage instruments, often using piano or organ to drive the songs along. 2006's "A Hundred Miles Off" graduated to a more rocking, upbeat sound, but was quite good as well--and it's an example of the band's penchant for creativeness and reinvention, which is part of what makes the Walkmen so good. Also appearing are White Rabbits, riding high on a huge wave of buzz created by their 2007 album, "Fort Nightly," which used a sometimes startling mix of 3-part harmonies, surf-inspired guitars, piano, group chants, and general creativity. Just six months ago, they played here on their first national tour. This time around, they have a David Letterman appearance under their belt. Opener White Denim was one of the winners at SXSW this year -- their gleeful, unpredictable punk/classic rock/psychedelic mashup has been turning a lot of heads. Don't miss this show.
