An unblinking look at the modern healthcare system, The Waiting Room takes you inside Oakland's Highland Hospital, where the facility struggles to care for a community of largely uninsured patients.

Directed by Bay Area resident Peter Nicks, this gripping, character-driven documentary uses a blend of cinema verite and interviews with the principals to showcase an intimate, unsparing and sometimes uplifting look at how the patients, staff and caregivers cope with disease, bureaucracy and difficult decisions.

The film will be followed by what promises to be a riveting panel discussion among Bay Area healthcare professionals.
