The Umayyad Dynasty ruled the Islamic World from the commercial centre of Damascus in the Eighth Century CE. Inspired by the Byzantine architecture of their conquered territories, they created the Grand Mosque in Damascus, splendid palaces, decorated bath houses and well defended caravanserais. Economic and security problems saw a decline in their power and eventually they would be overthrown by the Abbasid Dynasty based in Baghdad.
