Our first meeting of 2011 will focus on what the impoverished island nation of Haiti is going through, with the very knowledgeable and experienced Seth Donnelly of the Haiti Action Committee providing details.

Donnelly has titled his talk, which will include a short video presentation, "One Year after the Earthquake: the Ongoing Struggle in Haiti for Recovery, Human Rights, and Real Democracy". We can most likely expect tales of the population there dealing with not just the devastation of the earthquake, but also poorly-executed relief attempts, a ragged election and a cholera epidemic. Donnelly's many trips to Haiti will surely also afford us human stories of determination and survival through the everyday chaos there. And of course he will have suggestions for how we can take action toward alleviating the suffering in Haiti.

Seth Donnelly is based on the Peninsula, and has been a social studies high school teacher in the Mountain View/Los Altos District for the past ten years. He has been a member of the Haiti Action Committee for the past six years, and has traveled regularly to Haiti on human rights and solidarity delegations - organized through HAC - since 2004. During his last trip, he took a group of local high school students to deliver medical supplies and aid as part of an effort to expand and deepen ties of solidarity with Haitian grassroots activists. His next trip is scheduled for February.

The UU is wheelchair accessible. Coffee, tea and dessert will be on hand. We hope to see you for another informative Peace Action evening.
