Tommie Smith, famous track and field athlete, will be visiting San Diego State University on Wednesday, February 3rd at the Athletic Center Auditorium. Though the track is several feet away, Smith’s discussion is about the crossroads between sports and the accountability of each athlete.

Set to speak at 6:30 PM, Smith will give his account that led to the iconic image of him and John Carlos raising a gloved fist in the air during the 1968 Olympic Games. Besides being an athlete, Smith has also taught sociology at Oberlin College in Ohio and he is a former faculty member at Santa Monica College in California.

This speaking engagement kicks off the Black History Month celebration at San Diego State University. This event is free and open to all students, faculty, and staff. Early arrival is recommended as seating is limited.
