Boston's Oldest Continuous Italian Festival Celebrates Its 97th Anniversary Year

Name of Event: The Sorrento Cheese Fisherman’s Feast

What: The oldest continuous Italian festival in the North End of Boston.

Since 1910, this North End Feast has celebrated the devotion of immigrant Sicilian fishermen to the Madonna del Soccorso di Sciacca (Our Lady of Help). This year the Feast takes place August 16 – 19 on North, Lewis, and Fleet Streets with its usual enticing selection of entertainment, food and traditional processions.

Thursday, August 16:
• Procession of the Madonna del Soccorso to the waterfront for the blessing of Fishing Waters (7:00 PM)
• The Sixth Annual Sorrento Cheese Tower Building Competition featuring local Italian-American personalities competing to win money for their chosen local charities (9:00 PM)

Friday, August 17:
• Sorrento Cheese and Wine Tasting (8:00 PM)
• Louis Vanaria, Mario from “A Bronx Tale,” performs on the Sorrento Cheese Stage (8:00 PM)
• Eddie Mekka, Carmine “The Big Ragu” Regusa from TV show Laverne & Shirley (9:30 PM)

Saturday, August 18:
• Special Children’s activities, including face painting, games and prizes (12:00 PM)
• Chef Demonstrations using various Sorrento Cheese products (4:00 PM)
• Presentation of Outstanding Italo-American Award (7:00 PM)
• Sorrento Cheese and Wine Tasting (8:00 PM)
• Hollywood and TV star Gianni Russo performs on the Sorrento Cheese Stage (9:30 PM)

Sunday, August 19:
• 7 hour Procession of the statue of the Madonna del Soccorso through the North End Streets (12:00 PM)
• Chef Demonstrations using various Sorrento Cheese products (4:00 PM)
• The famous Flight of the Angel. As the statue of The Madonna returns to the North Street, a young angel flies from a fourth floor window and recites a prayer to her (8:00 PM)

Admission: All entertainment is free and open to the public. Visitors will have to pay at vendor stands.
