Inside Crime & Punishment in New York: Author Stanley N. Alpert Speaks
The Social Salon cordially invites you to attend a fascinating insiders account of crime, based on the amazing story of a former federal prosecutor who was kidnapped, but managed to turn the tables on his abductors then told his story in a book whose film rights have been purchased by a major motion picture company.

Come hear the compelling story of Stanley N. Alpert, an ex-Assistant U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn, whose acclaimed biography, The Birthday Party: A Memoir of Survival, describes his harrowing yet often hysterical kidnapping at the hands of New York street thugs. In January 1998, Alpert was taken at gunpoint off a Greenwich Village street by a gang of robbers, who held him captive while using his cash machine and credit cards.
The perpetrators threatened to murder him if he failed to cooperate. He spent his entire 38th birthday negotiating to save his life and memorizing clues that, if he were not killed, could be used by law enforcement to capture the criminals. After a 25-hour ordeal, Alpert made it out and related his seemingly tall tale to the FBI and NYPD, who, after initially not believing him, nabbed the bad guys with lightning speed.
The Social Salon this month presents his analysis of crime and punishment in New York. Alpert will discuss how crime impacts our lives and those of the victims and perpetrators.
Alpert, who grew up in Brooklyn and got his law degree at the University of Pennsylvania, is now an environmental advocate and goes after polluters a sort of male Erin Brockovich. But his experiences both as a prosecutor and as a victim give him a special insight into the citys criminal justice system.
The Birthday Party has been acquired by the new Tom Cruise/Paula Wagner United Artists, who called it a hot book in the New York Times.
William Grimes of The New York Times writes that Stan induced in the thugs reverse Stockholm syndrome, and actually lived a ghetto version of The Ransom of Red Chief.
