The Quilts of Gees Bend Visit the San Mateo County Libraries

Hailed by The New York Times as some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced, the Quilts of Gees Bend makes the rounds of the San Mateo County Library. This widely acclaimed exhibit, now showing at the De Young Museum, is completing a nationwide tour. The slide/lecture from the De Young Museum docents includes selections of more than 60 quilts made by four generations of African American women who live in Alabama. The quilts are pieced from scraps of fabric often salvaged from worn-out clothes, combined in extraordinary combinations of color, pattern, and texture. Their bold geometric shapes, dramatic shifts in scale, and improvisational approach produce striking abstract compositions in fabric.
