The next Professorial Inaugural Lecture of this semester will be given by Professor David Percy, Professor of Operational Research and Applied Statistics in Salford Business School and is entitled Sublime Decisions with Subliminal Mathematics.

The lecture will be held on Thursday 10 March 2011 in the Old Fire Station commencing at 5:30pm. Please come along and join us.

About the Lecture

"My passion for mathematics has led to a hugely enjoyable and satisfying academic career. There is tremendous fun in discovering and developing concepts and techniques that are beautiful and inspirational, but implementing these methods can be of crucial importance. Much of my research involves determining optimal decisions for a wide variety of stochastic applications, a process that relies upon the ubiquitous Bayes' theorem. This lecture reviews some diverse problems that I have worked on, including tactics for games and strategies for sports, scientific evidence in court, medical diagnosis and prognosis, warranties and insurance, and scheduling maintenance in industry. It also considers how similar methodology might resolve decision problems that arise with defence and security, government planning, law enforcement, and communication networks". - Professor David Percy
