The Prado: Spanish Art in the Antipodes Course August 31, 2012

Spain its history, art, architecture and culture has for many years been slightly off the Australian radar. This years blockbuster exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane, however, is set to change that, with more than 100 masterpieces by El Greco and Velzquez, Titian and Rubens, Jusepe de Ribera and Goya to be seen in Australia for the first time. These paintings are from the collection of Madrids magisterial Museo Nacional de Prado and track four centuries of Spanish art. But what kind of a society gave rise to this painting, and how does it fit into our sense of Spanish art overall? This study day sets the Portraits of Spain exhibition into a historical as well as aesthetic context, exploring the thematic trends of Spanish art and particularly considering the role of the monarchy in establishing one of the worlds most superb collections of art.
