Nuri Simsekler, Assistant Professor of Literature and President, Rumi Center, Selçuk University, Konya

When Sufis gather to sing, play music, whirl, and recite poetry, the ritual is known as the Sema, a deep listening. This event features sixteen Sufi musicians and whirling dervishes who will sing and dance the traditional Sema. With musical accompaniment, Nuri Simsekler will read in Persian and Peter Rogen in English from the works of Islam’s great mystical poet Jelaluddin Rumi, whose voice has inspired love and compassion in the hearts of all who listen. Hemdem çelebi Efendi, the world head of the Mevlevi Sufis, will deliver the opening remarks.
