Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance
Auditions announced for August production at CHAW
WASHINGTON, D.C. Auditions for an August community production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance are Saturday, April 12, 2008, 2-5 PM, at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th Street SE, near to the Eastern Market Metro. Those unable to make the audition date can schedule an appointment by calling 202-547-4102 or emailing [email protected]. Performances are planned for August 8-9, 15-16, 2008 at CHAW. Rehearsals begin in May. The Pirates of Penzance is under the musical direction of Barbara Schelstrate. Jill Strachan is providing stage direction and choreography is by Alvin Mayes. All are welcome to audition and to be part of the production.
The Pirates of Penzance, or, The Slave of Duty dates from 1879 and is chock full of many familiar G&S favorites, including “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General” and “A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One.” The August 2008 production will be the 8th time that the GLBT Arts Consortium and the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) have offered a community production of a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta. Past productions have included: Iolanthe, The Mikado, Patience, HMS Pinafore, The Gondoliers, and a sampler of songs from 8 operettas.
The GLBT Arts Consortium is a network of more than 15 glbt arts organizations and artists in the Washington, D.C. area that seeks to increase the visibility of glbt arts. The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop is a community-based, not-for-profit organization building community through the arts. CHAW offers numerous ways and opportunities to get involved in the arts through classes, workshops, performance, music, art and private music instruction.
