In Gilbert & Sullivan's classic operetta, a wealthy 19th-century orphan is given apprenticeship with pirates rather than as a ships' pilot due to a hard-of-hearing nursemaid. Now that he is 21 and his apprenticeship is ending, he feels obligated to do his duty to society and rid the seas of his friends for their piracy.
