The Pieces of Me exhibition features nearly fifty paintings, ceramics, multimedia works, and texts created by artists from L.A. GOAL, a non-profit agency serving adults with developmental disabilities. The artists were invited to reflect upon their ancestral roots: immediate and extended families, countries of origin, rituals, traditions, and stories. If family members were available, they turned to them to help clarify details, fill in blanks, and provide family documents, artifacts, and photographs.

Recalling their fondest memories of growing up, the artists focused on their most cherished family relationships. They soon realized that, aside from family heirlooms, they had inherited much more: talents, attributes, and temperaments that helped define who they are. They came to understand that every person is "one-of-a-kind," yet comprised of many “pieces.” Whether merely inherited or fully embraced, the legacy of family resonates in every life.

Through art and outreach activities, L.A. GOAL educates the community about the abilities of people with disabilities. Its educational, vocational and recreational programs provide opportunities for its members to increase their independence and employability. Its vision is to create a more open society where all people with developmental disabilities can achieve their highest level of independence, employment, and inclusion.
