The Philosophies of the Enlightenment April 20, 2012

The Enlightenment was an extraordinarily rich period in the history of philosophy. It produced enduring innovations in natural philosophy and the sciences, in cosmology and metaphysics, in theories of knowledge, theories of happiness and liberty, natural religion and in relation to the arts (one might think of Bach, Mozart, Goethe and Blake). We will examine some of these great innovations with reference to Hume, Kant and Rousseau, Voltaire, Leibniz and Newton, Mary Wollstonecraft, Casanova and de Sade.
