The Orion Ensemble, Chicago’s nationally recognized and critically acclaimed chamber music ensemble, opens its 17th season, “Musical Connections,” with a program combining a chamber music favorite by Schubert with lesser-known 20th century works by Martinů and Arutiunian. The program features one of the gems of the chamber music repertoire, Franz Schubert’s Trio in B-Flat Major for Violin, Cello and Piano, Op. 99; the Sonatina in C Major for Clarinet and Piano (1957) by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů; and Armenian composer Alexander Arutiunian’s 1993 Suite for Clarinet, Violin and Piano. The opening concert program takes place Sunday, October 4 at 7 p.m. at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church, 227 East Side Drive in Geneva; Sunday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Nichols Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston; and Wednesday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Fazioli Piano Showroom in the Fine Arts Building, 410 S. Michigan Avenue, Suite 825.
