Fairfax County EDA’s “Transforming Fairfax” Conference set for June 18

On June 18, 2009, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) presents a thought-provoking conference called “The New Urban Economic Model: The Transformation of Fairfax County.”

Fairfax County, once a suburban bedroom community adjacent to Washington, D.C., now is a major business location and a focal point of innovation, boasting headquarter locations for the likes of Volkswagen, CSC and Hilton Hotels. What happens (or what should happen) when a suburban community evolves into an urban center? How does a community navigate such a transformation while maintaining its position as a desirable location for business – with a strong economy and a higher quality of life?

Interact with distinguished experts and panelists who will explore these issues and more:

•Keynote speakers – Urban Land Institute Senior Resident Fellow (and former Indianapolis Mayor) William Hudnut and Brookings Institution urban policy scholar Anthony Downs – will examine the transformation of suburban communities

•Insightful panelists from the Washington, New York and Seattle areas will describe how forward-thinking communities are rising to the challenges and opportunities created by urbanization

•Senior corporate executives from CSC, Hilton Hotels Corporation and Volkswagen Group of America will provide an in-depth understanding of the critical factors their companies consider when expanding or relocating in an urbanizing community

This conference at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner follows the FCEDA’s successful 2007 National Conference on the Creative Economy and is a must-attend event full of insight and networking opportunities for corporate executives, corporate facilities managers, site location consultants, commercial real estate professionals, economic developers and urban planners.
