The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Book, Music & Lyrics by Rupert Holmes
Maryann Swift, Stage Director/Choreographer
Markus Hauck, Music Director

The Mystery of Edwin Drood was a Broadway musical based on the unfinished Charles Dickens novel of the same name. Dickens died before he was able to complete the book, and the murderer of Edwin Drood was never revealed. Rupert Holmes employs a novel method of determining the outcome of the story: the audience votes on it. In our production, the English troupe of players who call The Music Hall Royale home are decidedly excited about the premiere of this, their new show, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. They are not quite certain how it will all turn out, but are poised to favor each audience with their rendition of Charles Dickens’ famous unfinished masterpiece. They are cautiously optimistic about this “voting bit” to take place near the end and wrap it all up—they share a bit of this excitement with the audience before it all begins…they will engage our audience throughout and campaign for the popular vote as our evening winds down. They are, as one would expect in a music hall, rowdy, a bit bawdy, but above all, they are very congenial hosts for the evening!
