The Mercy Alliance is a Washington DC based band led by songwriter Joe Rathbone specializing in emotive, melodic indie rock with an aggressive rhythm section featuring longtime DC drummer Greg Fritz, who's lyrical playing provides a great foil for Rathbone’s raw baritone and gritty guitar playing.

The band’s “sound” draws on influences ranging from the upbeat roots rock of Wilco and Alejandro Escovedo to a beautiful “down” in the vein of Joe Henry and early Neil Young. There are musical nods to The Replacements, John Lennon, Joe Jackson and David Gilmour mixed up in a very inventive stew of sound.

Joe recently released his fifth record “Waking Up the Sun” recorded and produced in Nashville by esteemed indie producer David Henry, David Mead Guster, Josh Rouse, Kelly Joe Phelps, Jars of Clay etc..

Joe has opened shows for Shawn Colvin, Steve Forbert, Chuck Prophet, Al Stewart and appeared a couple times on PRI’s The Mountain Stage.

Live shows are an intense mix of original music with some creative cover tunes ranging from The Cure, to Bonnie Raitt , to Roxy Music and more. The Mercy Alliance live features passionate group vocals and extended instrumental sections delivering a live experience that compares well to the more finely honed sound of the recordings.

A must see for all fans of great live music.
