In the early 1970s, the Mahavishnu Orchestra reigned over the landscape of popular music. British-born guitar god John McLaughlin assembled a stellar lineup of jazz and rock musicians in New York City to form this multi-national 'orchestra.' The Mahavishnu Orchestra combined jazz and rock influences with some classical flavor to create a new jazz-rock fusion. Their six albums of innovative, explosive, and emotionally uplifting instrumental music remain popular today; however, the music is rarely heard live.

The New York City-based Mahavishnu Project was formed in 2000 as an interpretive repertory ensemble, dedicated to performing the Mahavishnu Orchestra's catalog and presenting it to new audiences. The Project is helmed by composer and percussionist/drummer Gregg Bendian, one of the most creative and in-demand improvisers on the free jazz and creative/new music scenes. Under his direction, the Mahavishnu Project has breathed new energy and life into a music whose essence lay in the dynamism of live performance, earning the endorsement of John McLaughlin himself.
