Howard Thurman was a 20th century religious leader and thinker whose prophetic vision and quiet mentorship were instrumental to Martin Luther King Jr. and other activists of the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. Thurman’s life and work reveal the powerful synergy between spirituality and social engagement, the inseparability of personal and social transformation. This session will feature video and audio selections of Dr. Thurman, and our discussion will consider the profound relevance of his wisdom for the present day. Copies of the newly released six-CD audio collection of some of Thurman's most inspiring sermons, meditations, prayers, and speeches will be available for purchase.

Dr. Liza J. Rankow is an interfaith minister and the founding director of OneLife Institute, an Oakland-based nonprofit organization One Life Institute. She regularly teaches classes on Thurman in community and academic settings, and is co-editor/ producer of the CD collection, "The Living Wisdom of Howard Thurman."
