Tonight's feature, one of Huppert's earliest works, is arguably the film that made her a star.
Claude Chabrol's The Lacemaker (La dentelliere) references in its title the Vermeer portrait of a quiet young woman. Huppert plays an unschooled hairdresser in Paris who falls in love with an equally shy student far above her in his family background. Ultimately, the class difference proves ruinous, her fate genuinely heartbreaking. (35mm, 108 mins.)
