Genre: Drama
Director: Pavel Lunghin
Cast: Pyotr Mamonov, Viktor Sukhorukov, Dmitri Dyuzhev, Yuri Kuznetsov, Viktoriya Isakova
Duration: 110 minutes

Synopsis: This highly acclaimed, multi-award winning film takes a meditative look at redemption and forgiveness through the eyes of a self-exiled Russian priest, Father Anatoly, living on a cold windswept island in the stern landscape of the Russian North. In the tradition of the holy fool, Father Anatoly relishes his harsh existence and takes comfort in self-deprivation (he sleeps on a bed of coal). His wish to be left alone often causes him to behave in an inexplicable and deranged manner that leads to both frustration and inspiration in his fellow priests and visiting locals looking for miracles. The Island is a masterful and often comedic contemplation on the human need to believe in God and how to reconcile spirituality with the corruptibility of the world and our own nature. Beautifully enacted against the backdrop of snow-covered rocky islands, icy water, and lowering white skies.
