Oftentimes the fresh air, light, and color that filled Impressionist pictures emanated from the artists’ pleasurable strolls through parks and gardens. Some of these painters were avid gardeners, while others were simply outdoor loungers, but they all enjoyed the trend toward greater informality and eclecticism in nineteenth-century landscape design. This lecture celebrates the marriage of the two arts illustrated in the works of Manet, Renoir, Monet, and other Impressionist masters.
