THE WORLD PREMIÈRE OF IAN WILSON’S
THE HANDSOMEST DROWNED MAN IN THE WORLD
FOR NARRATOR AND ENSEMBLE FEATURING GAVIN FRIDAY

AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF IRELAND, DUBLIN 2

Based on Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story of the same name, the Festival’s first Arts Council funded commission, marks the 80th birthday of this Nobel prizewinning Colombian author. It features Gavin Friday, narrator collaborating with musicians Carol McGonnell, clarinet; Catherine Leonard, violin; Guy Johnston, cello and Finghin Collins, piano.

The work will be coupled with Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time written for the same musical forces. The performance of this gargantuan work heralds the 100th Anniversary of the birth of this great French composer in 2008.

Gavin Friday is a prolific vocalist, artist and composer. His diverse musical collaborations span the gamut of the arts world from Shakespeare to Bono, Andrea Corr to Guggi, Jim Sheridan to Kurt Weill and Prokofiev, to mention but a few. Belfast-born composer Ian Wilson, “a composer of imaginative resource” (Gramophone Magazine) has had his music performed and broadcast on six continents. His music has also featured prominently in major festivals such as the BBC Proms and the Venice Biennale. His work covers the spectrum of musical forms including chamber, opera, vocal and orchestral works. His music is published by Ricordi London and Universal Edition. He is a member of Aosdana.
