Composer and musician Phillip Johnson presents his brilliant musical score to the silent movies of French director Georges Melies.

Johnson was called "the H.G. Wells of the jazz world" by Rolling Stone Press, and "Potent and frolicsome, one of modern music's more versatile writers" by Billboard when he premiered The Georges Melies Project at New York's Lincoln Centre to two sold-out audiences.
Following seasons in Europe and across the USA, Riverside is proud to present this fascinating work with Phillip Johnston leading an ensemble of some of Australia's best jazz instrumentalists: Daryl Pratt on vibraphone, Matt MacMahon on piano, Cameron Undy on bass, and the composer on soprano saxophone as they play accompaniment to the silent films of iconic cinema director Georges Melies (1861-1938).
Georges Melies was one of the cinema's earliest directors. He made more than 500 short films between the years 1896 and 1912, of which only a fraction survive. The Georges Melies Project will feature many of his recently-restored films, most of which have rarely been seen. Phillip Johnson's inspired artistry creates a perfect symmetry of silent film and contemporary music that is a unique and thrilling live experience.
