Famous both for his seminal silent classic, Metropolis (recently restored) as well as for his Hollywood westerns and thrillers, Viennese-born Lang was a master of film noir and science fiction. His early films, the Dr. Mabuse trilogy, about a master-criminal, and his epic work based on Nordic legends, The Nibelungen Saga, were later followed in America by politically-concerned thrillers such as Fury, While the City Sleeps, The Big Heat and Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, as well as excellent remakes of Jean Renoir films (Scarlet Street, Human Desire) and unusual westerns, like the Marlene Dietrich vehicle, Rancho Notorious. Three Fritz Lang features will be screened, plus numerous excerpts, and excerpts from a documentary.
