On the heels of their acclaimed collaborative shows, StringWreck and The Illustrated Book of Invisible Stories, internationally recognized Bay Area choreographers Janice Garrett and Charles Moulton join forces once again to present their newest co-created dance theater work, The Experience of Flight in Dreams. The evening-length piece explores images, metaphors and sensations of flight embedded deep in the human imagination and celebrates the power of the human spirit to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles in order to realize states of freedom and grace.

Five dance soloists perform in the 70-minute piece as well as 12 dancers who form a “movement choir.” Garrett and Moulton conceived of this innovative concept in their last work The Illustrated Book of Invisible Stories, using a large group of volunteers from the arts community as a living stage set, amplifying and contextualizing the choreography. Acting at times like an unseen force of nature moving one of the soloists upside down and sideways along a wall of hands and at other times becoming an enormous prop like a bridge of logs, the choir’s continuous shapeshifting enchanted critics and audiences alike. “It’s about using the human body as an animating tool on a massive scale,” says Moulton. “It creates moments of true wonder and surprise, filling the theater with a flood of movement and dramatic action.”

The premiere marks the official launch of Garrett + Moulton Productions, the partners’ newly realized, co-directed performing arts organization.
