Winner of four Dora Mavor Moore Awards, the Governor General's Literary Award for Best English Drama and the Floyd S. Chalmers Award for Best New Play, The Drawer Boy has become a new classic in Canadian theatre. Theatre Passe Muraille is proud to present it as the opening production of its landmark 40th season.

Michael Healey’s extraordinarily popular play is based on the true story of the creation of Theatre Passe Muraille’s The Farm Show, which was developed by a group of actors who went to live in Clinton, Ontario in 1972. Funny and moving in equal share, The Drawer Boy begins with the clash of urban and rural, youth and middle age, the life of the artist versus the life of the farmer. It ends on a profoundly hopeful note of transformation through the power of storytelling.

Theatre Passe Muraille presented the premiere of this captivating tale in 1999. It has subsequently been seen on stages across Canada, the US and the globe.

Praise for The Drawer Boy:

“The Drawer Boy is a beautifully written play. It moves from toughness and hilarity to something devastating and tender. By taking off from an earlier Passe Muraille drama, The Farm Show, and seeing that theatrical event from a new angle, it is one of the first plays to create an authentic tradition in our culture.” – Michael Ondaatje

“Healey has created a magnificent work, rich in compassion and universal in scope … Shows every sign of becoming a Canadian classic.” – NOW Magazine (five stars)

“Sheer magic … A moving tribute to art’s healing power.” – Maclean’s Magazine
