The second season of the popular de Young Poetry Series begins this Friday, September 7, with a reading and book signing by Nathaniel Mackey. This unique series features an impressive line-up of award-winning U.S. and international poets. Recipient of the 2006 National Book Award for his fourth full-length poetry collection entitled Splay Anthem, Nathaniel Mackey uniquely incorporates the influences of jazz and different cultures into his work. Jazz saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh, a professor of jazz and world music at San Francisco State University, will accompany Mackey as he reads movements from Splay Anthem this Friday night at the de Young. You don’t want to miss this exceptional event in the Koret Auditorium from 7–8:15 pm. The Poetry Series, as part of the museum’s Friday night programs, occurs on three Fridays this fall. Jorie Graham will be the featured poet on October 5, followed by Keith and Rosmarie Waldrop on November 9.
